Nearly 50 students studying Advanced Placement U.S. History at Amsterdam High School received an all-expenses paid trip of a lifetime this fall to see the hit Broadway play Hamilton in New York City.
Each year as part of their AP History studies students participate in a project using the songs from the Hamilton musical. The students are challenged to make music videos of the songs and analyze the lyrics.
Their teacher, Nancy Spagnola, received an email from the Gilder Lehrman Institute about a program where public high school students could receive tickets to see a performance of Hamilton at the Richard Rodgers Theatre and have a private Q and A session with the cast after the show. Spagnola applied and AHS students were awarded tickets that would have normally cost $183 a seat for $10 each. The GASD Educational Foundation, Inc. covered the additional $10 cost per ticket. GASD provided transportation to and from the show in New York City and Dunkin Donuts (Kevin Garcia) donated donuts for breakfast on the ride down.
“It was a real community effort,” Spagnola said. “Essentially, everyone came together to allow 46 students to see Hamilton on Broadway at no cost to them. What a great experience!”
