Dear families,
I am writing to clarify the events of an altercation that took place at the Sept. 14 city-run homecoming bonfire.
The bonfire, which began at 6:30 p.m., proceeded smoothly until a number of minor alterations broke out among students and individuals attending the event. Amsterdam Police were present and responded quickly. All individuals involved were detained for questioning, and were subsequently released without charges, pending further investigation.
A thorough search of the area was conducted by local law enforcement, and contrary to initial attendee reports, there were no injuries, or allegations of assault during the event. Furthermore, there were no confirmed reports of weapons and significant physical altercations.
In addition to Amsterdam Police, numerous security personnel, including school resource officers, event organizers, and administrators, were also present to ensure the ongoing safety of attendees.
We are grateful to our community law enforcement partners for their swift response to the incident.
Please know that the safety of our community is always our top priority. In response to the recent events and out of an abundance of caution, additional security measures will be implemented in our schools and at our sporting events during Homecoming Week. Sheriff’s deputies have been stationed districtwide and will be conducting exterior door checks, and ensuring that all students and visitors entering the buildings pass through metal detectors and undergo thorough weapon screenings.
The wellbeing of our school community is also paramount. Social workers and guidance counselors are always available to support students and staff.
As always, we remind you: if you see something, say something. We want everyone to feel safe and report concerns immediately to a building principal or school resource officer.
I look forward to a spirited and safe Homecoming Week and a great 2023-24 school year full of growth and learning.
Sincerely,
Richard Ruberti
GASD Superintendent of Schools
