LEGO Robotics and You Cubed Math Enrichment Programs

The Greater Amsterdam School District successfully completed its third year of the LEGO Robotics and You Cubed Math Enrichment Programs, hosted at Tecler Elementary. With 118 students participating in YouCubed Math and 127 in LEGO Robotics, the programs offered hands-on learning experiences that engaged students from grades 1 to 8. Principal Tina O’Brien of McNulty Elementary praised the programs for fostering creativity and critical thinking. The district’s commitment to quality education was evident through its investment in state-of-the-art materials, while lunch provisions and dedicated teaching staff ensured a positive and enriching experience for all.

Welcoming William (Billy) Eipp to the Amsterdam School District

Two decades of experience in math and computer science.

The Greater Amsterdam School District is excited to welcome William (Billy) Eipp , a New York State Certified Secondary Teacher with over two decades of experience in math and computer science, to the team as the new Secondary Computer Science & Technology Coordinator for grades 6-12 and Computer Science Teacher for grades 9-12. With a background in both high school education and higher education at SUNY Fulton-Montgomery Community College (FMCC), Eipp brings a wealth of expertise in STEM fields, including developing cutting-edge programs in computer science and cybersecurity.

Eipp has made a significant impact over 18 years in high school education, inspiring students to excel in STEM disciplines. He then spent three years at FMCC, where he played a pivotal role in advancing the college’s computer science and cybersecurity programs. In a move that marks a return to his educational roots, Eipp has been recruited by Amsterdam’s Superintendent Richard Ruberti and Director of Secondary Instruction Sarah Matarazzo to join the Greater Amsterdam School District staff. In his new role, Eipp will teach college-credit courses in computer science and robotics through FMCC, introducing students to key programming languages such as Python and C++. His long-term vision includes expanding the program to offer advanced courses, including Computer Science II and a college-level artificial intelligence programming course.

Eipp’s prior industry experience includes co-founding NearMe, a startup that developed the first spatial search engine on the internet—a precursor to modern tools like Google Maps. He also spearheaded the development of a state-of-the-art Cyber Range in collaboration with IBM during his tenure at FMCC, offering students hands-on cybersecurity training. This extensive background in both education and industry positions Eipp as a valuable asset in preparing students for success in technology-driven careers.

“We are thrilled to have someone of Billy’s caliber join our team,” Ruberti said. “His expertise and experience in both high school and higher education will provide our students with unparalleled opportunities in computer science, robotics, and cybersecurity. We are confident that his leadership will help drive our district’s vision of preparing students for the future.”

Capital Improvement Projects Underway at GASD

Construction has begun on several key initiatives of the 2023 (when was the vote? 2023?) voter-approved capital project that are aimed at enhancing academic support and student opportunities throughout the Greater Amsterdam School District.

As part of the district’s 2023-24 capital project, both the middle school and high school have undergone significant renovations, including the expansion and modernization of classrooms. These improvements have allowed us to create new Distance Learning labs, an eSports room, and additional spaces designed to provide more learning opportunities for our students. These upgrades are important in expanding our educational offerings and ensuring that students have access to cutting-edge programs that support their academic growth and future success.

In athletics, the district is investing $925,000 in the high school gym, including a brand-new gym floor, updated bleachers, and basketball hoops. These renovations will ensure our students have access to the best facilities possible.

This capital project underscores GASD’s commitment to providing students with a comprehensive and modern education environment. Stay tuned for more updates as these projects continue!

Teacher of the Year

2024 Adaptive PE Teacher of the Year by NYS AHPERD

A big congratulations to Amsterdam High School’s Jessica Verrigni, who has been named the 2024 Adaptive PE Teacher of the Year by New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance! An outstanding educator, coach, and advocate, Coach Verrigni will be honored at the NYS AHPERD Conference this November in Verona. We are incredibly proud of her dedication and the positive impact she has made on our students. Congratulations, Coach Verrigni, for representing Amsterdam with excellence!

Amsterdam High School introduces Evolve Express detectors

To enhance the safety of its students, staff and visitors, Amsterdam High School implemented the use of Evolv Express detectors at the start of the 2024-25 school year. Additionally, metal detectors are now in place at both the high school and middle school field for sporting events.

The growing concern over gun violence in schools has created anxiety that can hinder the educational environment. By introducing Evolv Express, the district aims to make its schools safer, reduce security-related stress, and foster an environment conducive to learning. Unlike traditional metal detectors that often cause delays and discomfort due to false alarms, Evolv Express offers a more streamlined and dignified screening process.

“We understand the importance of a secure and welcoming school environment,” Superintendent Richard Ruberti said.

“Our goal with these changes is to not only ensure safety but to create the best possible conditions for our students to succeed and our staff to thrive.”
