ENL Students

Last week, the ENL (English as a New Language) seniors and newcomers from Greater Amsterdam School District embarked on an educational journey to Indian Ladder Farm and Thacher State Park. The goal of the trip was to immerse these students in the diverse cultural, agricultural, and historical heritage of New York State, while also fostering a sense of belonging and community.

The day began at Indian Ladder Farm, where students explored the state’s agricultural landscape firsthand. They learned about the farming practices that sustain New York’s agricultural economy, gaining insight into the region’s produce and the role of agriculture in local communities. Surrounded by the vibrant colors of fall, students picked apples, observed the daily operations of a working farm, and discovered how agriculture shapes the local economy and culture.

The trip continued to Thacher State Park, where the scenic views and unique geological formations offered students a hands-on lesson in New York’s geography and natural history. Guided by park staff, the students examined the region’s rock formations and learned about the geological forces that have shaped the landscape over millions of years. The experience provided valuable context to their studies and helped bridge the gap between the classroom and the natural world around them.

Beyond academics, this trip fostered community and connection among students from diverse backgrounds, creating opportunities for bonding and shared discovery. As they navigated new learning experiences together, students expressed excitement and appreciation, making lasting memories and friendships.

GASD is proud to offer such enriching learning experiences that highlight New York’s natural and cultural heritage while supporting our ENL students in feeling connected to their new home.
