Day of the Dead

On November 1, students of Spanish at LLA came together to honor Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), a traditional Mexican holiday dedicated to celebrating and remembering loved ones who have passed away.

In the spirit of this vibrant tradition, students crafted colorful “papel picado” and marigold flowers from tissue paper, learning about the cultural significance behind each creation. They also practiced and performed a skit called Las Calaveras Bailan (“The Skeletons Dance”) and sampled pan de muerto, a traditional sweet bread enjoyed during the holiday.

A highlight of the celebration was the creation of an ofrenda (altar) in LLA’s new Student Center, where students and teachers could place items in memory of loved ones who have passed. The ofrenda, decorated with flowers, candles, and symbolic offerings, served as a focal point for sharing fond memories and honoring those no longer with us.

This special event provided students with a meaningful, hands-on way to experience Mexican culture and learn about the history and traditions of Día de los Muertos. The Greater Amsterdam School District is proud of our students’ engagement with this beautiful holiday, which celebrates life, remembrance, and family.
