At this week’s Board of Education meeting, the Greater Amsterdam School District honored the remarkable legacies of two retired music educators, Mrs. Patricia “Patti” Valiante and Mr. Craig Pangburn, whose influence shaped generations of students and left an indelible mark on the district.

The heartfelt ceremony began with a festive holiday performance by the Amsterdam High School Select Chorus, a group that Mrs. Valiante herself founded during her tenure. Following the performance, AHS music teachers Christopher Stefani and Ann Wilary delivered moving tributes, highlighting the profound impact these educators had on the school and community. Superintendent Richard Ruberti remarked, “Mrs. Valiante and Mr. Pangburn were not only exemplary educators but true pillars of our community. Their passion for music and education inspired countless students, and their legacy will continue to resonate within our schools for years to come.”

Celebrating Mrs. Patricia “Patti” Valiante

Patricia Valiante, a beloved choral director and music teacher for over 25 years, was known for her passion, generosity, and dedication to her students. Her colleagues described her as an inspiring leader and mentor who created lasting connections between the school and the community through music. Patti’s efforts to foster a love for music extended beyond the classroom as she tirelessly advocated for music programs, often seeking ways to highlight the talent and positivity within Amsterdam.

One of Patti’s greatest legacies was the establishment of the AHS Select Chorus, which set a standard of excellence that endures today. She was remembered fondly for her infectious energy, humor, and unwavering belief in her students’ potential. Her impact on the district continues to be felt, even after her passing a few years ago.

The memorial fund established in her honor was used to purchase new choral risers for the high school chorus room—an investment she would have strongly championed. Patti’s name is often spoken with pride by those who knew her, many of whom shared how she transformed their lives:

  • “Because of Mrs. Valiante, I sang my first solo!”

  • “I became a professional musician.”

  • “I found my voice.”

The plaque dedicated to Mrs. Valiante will hang in the AHS Chorus room, a fitting tribute to her legacy of inspiring countless students and shaping the school’s music culture.

Honoring Mr. Craig Pangburn

Mr. Craig Pangburn was a cornerstone of the GASD music department and a beloved band director. Known for his humor, enthusiasm, and ability to connect with students, Craig provided a strong foundation for countless young musicians in Amsterdam. His formative band experiences helped students thrive and fostered a lifelong love of music.

Craig’s playful nature, marked by his endearing nicknames for students and his signature phrase of calling them “boneheads” in jest, created a welcoming and fun environment. Behind the scenes, he was a pioneer in ensuring students of all backgrounds could participate in the band program. He advocated tirelessly for their needs and was a staunch supporter of the district’s music program.

In addition to his contributions to music education, Craig wore many hats, serving as a coach, a dedicated member of the Amsterdam Teachers’ Association, and a unifying force among the staff. His legacy of leadership, advocacy, and compassion remains deeply rooted in the Amsterdam community.

The plaque honoring Mr. Pangburn will be displayed in the Lynch Literacy Academy Band Room, where his spirit and dedication will continue to inspire future generations of musicians.

A Legacy That Lives On

The Valiante and Pangburn families were present at the meeting to receive poinsettias donated by the AHS Chorus Boosters, a gesture of gratitude for sharing their loved ones with the Amsterdam community.

Through these tributes and memorial plaques, the Greater Amsterdam School District celebrates the enduring legacies of Mrs. Valiante and Mr. Pangburn. Their contributions to music education, their students, and the community will be cherished for years to come.

Their impact is beautifully summarized by Superintendent Ruberti: “Their influence reaches far beyond the classroom. They taught us not only music but the power of passion, kindness, and perseverance. We are forever grateful for their dedication and love.”
